On April 3rd, 1982, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, KeLyssa Laval was born. She could not have asked for a better city to be born in. While she grew up in the ‘English’ part of the city, and spoke with an anglicized accent, French was all around her, and as she grew, she could easily switch between the two languages, even to the point of speaking with a Quebec francophone accent. As she grew, whenever asked which language was her ‘primary’ language, she would state, with confidence and in no uncertain terms, that both English and French were her primary languages. Neither one superseded the other.
Her parents were loving and nurturing and, on the surface, seemed to be your average, every day people. KeLyssa’s mother, Avril, was a Spanish teacher at the high school that KeLyssa eventually attended. In fact, KeLyssa took Spanish from her mother once she reached high school, becoming proficient in this third language as well. Her father, Jacques, of a small chain of auto repair shops around Montreal that, while repaired and serviced vehicles of all shapes and sizes, specialized in motorcycles.
At the age of five, she was put into a self-defence class that taught her karate. “Young ladies need to know how to defend themselves,” is what her parents told her. She wasn’t complaining any, though. She got to punch and kick at things; which, for a five year old, is a very fun thing to do indeed. That wasn’t the only extracurricular activity that her parents put her into, however. They sent her to voice lessons and guitar lessons as well, believing that having skills in the arts could bolster her confidence as well.
When KeLyssa reached the age of 13, he father began to take her under his wing, wanting to culture her in the ‘family business’, as she was his only child. While she thought he was going to teach her about being a mechanic, she was only partly correct. She had spent much time with her father at his work during her childhood and had learned a few things about fixing vehicles. What she was to soon find out, however, was that her father’s work as a mechanic was, in fact, a cover for something much bigger. He was a member of the Hells Angels. More specifically, he was an arms dealer for them.
While she spent a lot of time with her father, learning about weapons of all kinds, from simple civilian weapons to high tech military grade weapons, including how to disassemble, reassemble, and operate, she was also expected to do well in school; a staple that both parents held in high regard.
As the years progressed, KeLyssa proved not only formidable with weapons, but in the classroom. She was on the honour roll and principle’s list for nearly all of high school. As well, she joined the cheerleading squad of her school, which she found immensely fun. High school in general she enjoyed, always striving to do her best and taking on extra credit projects and the occasional extracurricular activity if she could fit it in to her already extremely busy schedule.
While in her mother’s Spanish class, she discovered an aptitude for the language. She considered the fact that she possibly had an ear for language. Although, it was also a possibility that with her fluency in both English and French that it was only natural that she had an aptitude for Spanish in particular. However, the thought of studying languages and their syntax, morphology, phonetics, and semantics, amongst other aspects, appealed to her as a post-secondary study.
Upon graduation for high school, KeLyssa moved into her own apartment and started her post-secondary education at McGill University in linguistic studies. While she was focused on those studies, she continued to work for her father with some of his arms dealing. She helped mostly with either the assembly, disassembly and packaging of the arms. This went on all peachy until she was 20. Late one night, on her way home from helping her father, she was caught by surprise and arrested. What she found out, upon arrival at the interrogation room, was that the people who arrested her were CSIS officers.
CSIS wanted to offer her a chance to wipe her slate clean. Apparently they had a record on her, as it pertained to her work with her father. They wanted to offer her a job at the agency as long as she would pass along information to them about where her father’s firearms shipments were going and, if possible, who they were meant for. She was given 24-hours to decide. It was a difficult decision for her to make. She didn’t want to betray her father, but at the same time how could she say no to CSIS? Certainly they were powerful enough to keep her locked up for quite some time. Finally, when they time came, she had made a decision, as difficult as it was. She would join CSIS.
Her work as an operative seemed to go well for a few years. She was allowed to finish her B.A. in linguistics and continue on to do her Masters in it, while continuing to pass on information to CSIS. However, when she was at the age of 25, CSIS decided to bring her father in on charges. Luckily for KeLyssa, as it was her father, and as it would have put her life in danger if she testified, they were able to use other witnesses to testify in court and no one was the wiser to KeLyssa’s involvement in information passing.
Later that year, KeLyssa finished off her Masters degree in linguistics and she was offered a position as a full-fledged agent with CSIS. She hesitantly agreed to become one. Upon telling her father that she was an agent, she was surprised by his calmness. In fact, he even seemed pleased. She was put in contact with one of her father’s many friends in the Hells Angels. They wanted her to be an inside agent for them, passing on CSIS information to the Hells Angels; information that they could broker to the highest bidder. They agreed to keep minimal contact for a few years, to make it appear that she had little or no more contact with them. Once she gained their trust, at least somewhat, she started her passing along of information to her father’s friends, the Hells Angels.
For a few years KeLyssa worked as a regular agent, going on missions and doing investigations, often using her linguistic skills to help the agency. However, most recently she’s been put into an undercover position as a musician as a lead singer and guitar player for a rock band, named the Moosekateers, that toured the underground rock circuit. While touring with the band, she goes by the name Rain Allison.
Often, on the surface, KeLyssa seems rather bubbly and happy, this isn’t exactly the case. Well…not all of the time, anyway. She’s an intelligent young woman, with a keen ear for language and an eye for weapons. Especially firearms. She can often be heard just stating simple facts as if they were important things to know. She often gives off the air of being a sweet, girl next-door type, and thus catches people off guard by her knowledge of guns and karate.
Karate: An apt skill for defending oneself in hand-to-hand combat. KeLyssa has been practicing karate since the age of five. With over twenty years of constant practice, she has honed the skill into a weapon. Watch out if you get in a fight with her!
Guns: Having been trained by her father and working for him, she has an extensive knowledge of firearms, of both civilian and military guns. Not only has she received a theoretical knowledge of them, but also she knows how to use them, and to take them apart or assemble them.
Linguistics: She knows at least three languages fluently, and can pick up on other languages quickly…at least how to get by in them. Her university training in linguistics has taught her how to pick up on various aspects of varying languages.
Music: Music, while not having been a huge part of her life, has certainly had its impact. She has played guitar on and off for many years, and has enjoyed singing lessons.
Girl Next Door: KeLyssa has a ‘girl next door’ look to her, an innocence that helps her gain the trust of people she doesn’t yet know. This has always been a quality of KeLyssa’s. Admittedly, it is something that her father has used to his advantage for many years. How could such a sweet girl have been raised by anything but a loving, caring, law-abiding father?
Obiter Dictum: Some say that passing remarks, odd occurrences, or just everyday events hold no precedent on day-to-day life, and hold no real importance. KeLyssa believes, and knows, otherwise. Having been trained to keep a keen watch by both her father and CSIS (though mostly CSIS), she has learned that it’s important to know how things normally run so that you can spot anything out of the ordinary. Not only that, keep keen attention when speaking to people, as what they say, or how they say it, could hold great importance to your safety or the safety of others.
Hells Angels: Let it not be said that having a father that was in the Hells Angels is not a complete disadvantage. They’re useful for gaining information, and plenty of them still have much respect for her father, and would be more than happy to help her, as his daughter. Though many of them were surprised by her rise to stardom (at least in the underground circuit) and if ever she sees them, they joke around with her about how Hells little girl is all grown up and successful.
Limber: Due to both her karate and cheerleading, she has learned how to distort her body in various ways and not feel uncomfortable. Not only did this come in handy when doing training with CSIS, but also it’s great for when she’s in tight spaces or when she’s fighting…or both.
Cute: She’s a cutie pie. Just ask any boy she went to school with. She’s had her share of suitors. She’ll be the first to admit, at least to herself, that she’s not averse to using her looks to get what she wants, should she think that she’d be able to use them to her advantage.
Young Face: Because she looks younger than she is, people often don’t take he as seriously as she would like. More often than not, she has to prove herself in any number of ways before people can take her seriously, something that she finds highly annoying.
Underbelly of Society: Due to her familial connections to the Hells Angels, many in CSIS often find it difficult to trust her. They’re suspicious that she’s passing information over to the Hells Angels. Their suspicions aren’t completely unsubstantiated, of course…not that she’d let them know that. But it certainly does make it hard to gain the trust of those she works with and for, which can at times be frustrating.
On The Road Again: Constantly being on the road, going from city to city and gig to gig has her mentally, if not physically, exhausted a lot of the time. It’s hard to keep keen when one day you’re playing a show at a half past midnight in Toronto, and the very next evening you’re in Wichita, Kansas playing a show. Weeks, and even months, of this can fray anyone’s nerves.
Migraines: The overall stress of her life over the past few years has caused her to have migraines. They range from mild to blinding, quite literally. At times they get so bad they her vision flickers in and out. While she has medication for this, it can be quite debilitating at times, and she becomes stuck to bed rest for lack of being able to do anything else.
Night Terrors: If you’re sleeping in the same room as KeLyssa, or a room adjacent to hers, there’s a good chance you might just wake up to hear her screaming and moaning in her sleep. Along with the drugs she takes for the migraines, she has drugs to help prevent the night terrors. Being human, though, she forgets to take them at times. Sometimes for a few weeks at a time, and finally her night terrors become so bad that she’s forced back onto the meds again.
